Suicide Awareness: Crisis Preparedness Workshop

As part of Action Alliance Suicide Awareness Month, Endeavors Veteran Wellness Center will be hosting a Suicide Crisis Preparedness Workshop.
The Crisis Response Plan is a brief intervention designed to reduce suicidal behaviors. The CRP is developed collaboratively by a trained individual and an individual in crisis and serves as a checklist to follow during periods of emotional distress.
Objectives:
- Teach individuals how to apply the Crisis Response Plan
- Provide research showing the effectiveness of the CRP in comparison to treatment as usual
- Train clinicians, or other providers, an additional and effective model to use when working with crisis
Agenda:
- 1:30-2:00 p.m. | Opening remarks by Jill Palmer, DSW, LCSW Senior Director of Clinic Operations at Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Endeavors, San Antonio
- 2:00- 5:00 p.m. | Crisis Preparedness Training by Karina L. Bocanegra, Ph.D., LMFT Clinician at Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Endeavors, San Antonio; and Erika Jonietz, M.S.J, at UT Health San Antonio’s Transitional Care Clinic.

Dr. Jill Palmer
Jill Palmer, a Navy Veteran, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and 2019 graduate of the Doctor of Social Work program at the University of Tennessee with a research focus on Veterans, suicide prevention and quality of life. Dr. Palmer has nine years of leadership experience through both the Navy and the private sector. She has led teams of social workers, psychiatrists, and other personnel; provided program oversight for multiple programs; developed policies and procedures to implement evidence-based practices; and has managed program budgets. With over 16 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker, she is experienced in treating trauma, depression and anxiety in children, families, Veterans, and active duty populations. Jill is passionate about leading healthy, productive, innovative teams.
Dr. Karina Bocanegra
Dr. Karina Bocanegra was born and raised in El Paso, TX. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas in El Paso. Upon the completion of her undergraduate degree, she moved to San Antonio and enrolled in the Master’s program for Marriage and Family Therapy at St. Mary’s University where she also continued to pursue her Doctorate’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Bocanegra’s professional experience includes working with couples, families, and individuals. She has worked with the military community, severe mental health disorders, and has experience providing in-home therapeutic sessions within the community. Additionally, while working at UT Health Science Center San Antonio, she has trained Spanish-speaking providers in border cities on the topic of crisis and how to utilize a crisis response plan. Dr. Bocanegra completed her dissertation on “Factors Influencing Hispanic Soldiers Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse.”
Erika Jonietz
Erika Jonietz works at UT Health San Antonio’s Transitional Care Clinic. She is a native Texan and is completing her PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a BS in biology from MIT and an MS in science journalism from Boston University. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, baking, and clicker training her cat, Jackson.
