When one family’s beloved home was nearly destroyed in Hurricane Harvey, Endeavors’ Disaster Relief and Recovery program found a way to rebuild and restore.
Anyone who has ever had a longstanding family home knows: it’s more than just a building— it’s a collection of memories, legacies, and history, all wrapped up in siding and tiles and hardwood.
So, for Ivia Webb and her husband, leaving their home of 27 years due to the destruction of Hurricane Harvey was devastating.
Along with Mrs. Webb’s elderly mother, the couple was forced to flee as Harvey ripped through southeast Texas.
Their path to safety was confusing and riddled with rejection; the first night, they ended up spending the night in a car wash stall in their pickup. Next, they found refuge in a motel. Then, due to a power outage, the family was forced to move again. And again. And again. From motel to townhome to a FEMA trailer, the Webb family was residing in temporary living facilities for over a year.
They received assistance from FEMA and Red Cross and insurance, but it still wasn’t enough to repair their beloved home that had withstood so much damage in the storm.
Finally, a friend recommended Mrs. Webb contact Endeavors. She was immediately assigned a Disaster Case Manager who began working on obtaining funds for further recovery.
Success! Within months, the Webbs received an additional check from Red Cross. Finally, these funds would allow the Webbs to put new siding on their home! Recovery was in sight.
Mr. Webb was able to complete the repairs and hope began to grow as it became clear that the family would be able to move back into their home.
Though Mrs. Webb obviously hopes she never has to go through another disaster like Hurricane Harvey again, she now had a different perspective: “If the worst happens again, I can turn to Endeavors for help.”
