HURRICANE HELENE & MILTON RECOVERY EFFORTS
In the fall of 2024, Florida faced an unprecedented one-two punch from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, two powerful storms that struck the state less than two weeks apart. Hurricane Helene made landfall near Perry, Florida, on September 26, 2024, as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 140 mph—making it one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Big Bend region. Helene caused catastrophic storm surge, flash flooding, and tornado activity across multiple states, leaving more than 1.3 million Floridians without power and resulting in over 230 fatalities nationwide. Total damages were estimated between $30 billion and $47 billion, devastating homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods across the Southeast.
Before many communities could recover, Hurricane Milton made landfall on October 9, 2024, near Siesta Key as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds near 120 mph. Milton brought torrential rain, widespread flooding, and a record-breaking 46 tornadoes, compounding the destruction left by Helene. The storm knocked out power to more than 3 million homes and businesses and caused at least 24 deaths, with major agricultural and infrastructure losses reported statewide. Together, Hurricanes Helene and Milton created a “double-blow” disaster—overwhelming response systems, displacing thousands of residents, and deepening long-term recovery needs across Florida and surrounding states. The compounded effects of these storms have left lasting scars on communities, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated recovery, resilient rebuilding, and trauma-informed support for survivors.
