Hurricane Season is once again upon us. Up and down the eastern coast, across the Gulf, and in the Caribbean, communities are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. While we sincerely hope no one is severely impacted by any storms this year, we know the odds are that many homes and businesses will sustain some damage. To everyone living in hurricane-vulnerable areas, we want you to know that we will be standing by to help.
As a long-standing nonprofit with over fifteen years of superior, people-focused Disaster Relief and Recovery experience, Endeavors partners with local community partners and have established successful community partnerships with Long-Term Recovery Groups (LTRGs), Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADS), community nonprofits, municipalities, homeless/housing coalitions, and others assisting local communities impacted by federally declared disasters.
To reassure you that even the worst-case scenario will have a happy ending, we’re sharing 10 of our favorite Disaster Relief and Recovery articles that showcase our clients’ stories of hope and recovery.
Hurricane Harvey & Hurricane Maria
(August & September, 2017)
When the town of Salinas, Puerto Rico was cut off from potable water after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, Endeavors Puerto Rico employees worked non-stop to acquire water cisterns that would collect, filter, and pump fresh rain water into residents’ houses.
After Hurricane Harvey flooded over 5,000 homes in Hardin County, Texas, Endeavors DCM Brandy Ruben stepped up to build a relationship with local recovery effort leaders and advocate for residents impacted by the storm.
Recruiting 2,800 volunteers and securing $8 million in building materials to rebuild homes razed by Hurricane Maria was not in Endeavors’ Program Manager Carlos Cubero’s job description. But when he saw his fellow Puerto Ricans suffering, he knew he had to help. The result? A staggering 2,000 homes repaired, and many more lives restored.
With several major medical conditions and a fixed income, Nadine Ford was left in dire straits after Hurricane Harvey destroyed her home. The Endeavors DCM team was able to have a brand new home built just for her.
In 2020, on the third anniversary of Hurricanes Harvey and Maria, we took a step back to reflect on all the people we were able to help through our Disaster Recovery programs. From lost pets in Port Arthur, TX to powerless families with children dependent on respiratory machines, these stories are proof that good things happen when a community comes together.
Meet Pam McWilliams, Jacqueline Kopeski, and Allison Pamela. These Texans faced unimaginable devastation after Hurricane Harvey. Today, they have new homes, new hope, and renewed dignity.
Tropical Depression Imelda
Imelda affected approximately 6.6 million Texans and left an estimated $1 billion in damages behind in her wake. Over two years later, our Disaster Case Managers continue helping residents of Chambers, Harris, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Orange, and San Jacinto counties navigate the road to recovery.
In Florida, Lori Gerrard was living in unimaginable conditions after Hurricane Irma left her roof leaking and her home defenseless against rodents and bugs. Endeavors teamed up with estimators, contractors, and The Salvation Army to restore her home and her quality of life. It took a village, but we were able to give Lori a brand new, leak-free roof just in time for Christmas!
This article is a testament to the enormity of what good nonprofit partners can achieve together. We are enormously grateful for the many ways The American Red Cross has helped us serve communities impacted by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey!
- PARTNERS IN SHELTERING SURVIVORS: ENDEAVORS HELPS THE CITY OF DALLAS TAKE IN HURRICANE LAURA EVACUEES
When Hurricane Laura blew into Houston, Endeavors’ Emergency Response Reservists showed up within an hour to help the Dallas Fire Rescue, Police, Animal Rescue, and medical professionals activate a disaster emergency response.
