Hurricane Idalia Hurricane History & Current Recovery Status
Hurricane Idalia had its origins from an area of disturbed weather that began over the eastern Pacific and central America around August 23rd, 2023. Through the next two to three days, the area of disturbed weather slowly drifted northeast into the northwestern Caribbean Sea while slowly organizing. On August 26th, around 5 pm EDT, a tropical depression formed as the National Hurricane Center determined a closed circulation had developed. From Saturday, August 26th through early Monday morning of the 28th, Idalia slowly meandered through the northwestern Caribbean Sea, and it became a tropical storm on Sunday morning around 11 am EDT. By the following Monday morning, Idalia began its northward turn, and rapidly intensified from a tropical storm into a major hurricane on Tuesday ahead of an eventual landfall near Keaton Beach, FL just before 8 am EDT.
On August 30, 2023 Hurricane Idalia hit Keaton Beach as a Category 3 Hurricane with 125 mph sustained winds and a devasting storm surge of 7 to 12 feet. The storm surge washed away sand and dunes, relegating the once illustrious barrier islands to a thin shoreline, forever changing the geography of the Sunshine State. At least 8 people died, and experts estimate over $5 million in damages to the region. Hurricane Idalia’s primary impact was a devastating storm surge across the coastal Big Bend in Levy, Dixie, and Taylor counties. As entire communities began the painful, long, and heartbreaking work of putting their lives back together in the aftermath, the President approved an Emergency Declaration for the state of Florida, authorizing the allocation of funds to recovery efforts. HELPING Floridians REBUILD THEIR HOMES & THEIR LIVES
Endeavors’ Disaster Relief and Recovery (DRR) services connect emergency or disaster victims to services and funding they may not be aware of, helping them recover after an emergency or disaster situation. From operating safety shelters and facilitating evacuation efforts to providing home repairs, new furniture, and clothing, Endeavors’ Case Managers work ceaselessly to help in any way we can.
The DCMP offers survivors a centralized point of contact to assist in defining and implementing a recovery plan. While the program does not provide direct financial assistance and services, your Disaster Case Manager will connect you with local resources to guide you through the recovery process every step of the way. You will be assigned a personal Case Manager to develop a customized recovery plan, assist you with FEMA, SBA, or insurance applications and appeals, and coordinate with local resources to get you the resources and help you need to recover.
